Post Modernist Poster Design

You are going to be designing a recording artist poster with roots in the Post-Modernist movement. This is a period of design that chose to go against the structure of Modernism and add some chaos in the design world. Also know as "Grunge" design, named after the musical movement of the time, there was not a limit to the amount of fonts used in a piece or any specific formulas to follow. A large amount of the pieces included unexpected errors which made them appear edgy. Also, most artist used their own work and did not stick to using fonts they were given. Hand written text, text stolen from other sources, and hand drawn doodles were utilized in many cases. Remember, when making your own piece, be original in design and artwork and you don't have to worry about making it readable.... just interesting.

Artists to look at:

Neville Brody (Second from bottom)

Stefan Sagmeister (Very bottom)

Things that will be required of you:

Recording artist rough draft 200 pts.

Final file .JPG 300 resolution 600 pts.

Modernist Poster Design

I hope that your mind has been spinning after watching Helvetica. The goal was to educate and inspire you and give you a little foundation going into this next project. If you remember, the two main eras of design that were talked about in the film were the Modernist and the Post-Modernist eras. We will be going into both eras, but focusing on the Modernist for this project.

Essential Question: Using their knowledge of Adobe Illustrator and the modernist movement the student will be able to create a poster the represents an organization in the Modernist style.

The Modernist mindset was one of order, cleanliness, and simplicity. their work did involve images and colors but in a limited supply. Some of the artist you may use as a reference are listed below. If you click on the name it will take
you to a site but I recommend searching on your own.

Massimo Vignelli
Joseph Muller-Brockmann
Karl Gerstner
Max Huber
Wim Crouwel

YOUR ASSIGNMENT:
You are the graphic designer and you are trying to get your name established in the design world. You are going to get an assignment from a huge organization and you are going to be in charge of developing a promotional poster dealing with their upcoming event.

there will be three parts to this assignment.

1. CONCEPT: You are going to have to research your employer. Search online for as much information that you can to aid you in representing the organization. As soon as you gain your information you are going to need to sketch out four poster ideas. After conversation with other students and your boss (ME) you will begin production on one of the four.

2. CRITIQUE: After a few days we will all meet as a class with what we have and critique each others work. This is a time for improvement where will be voicing our opinions to help each other create a more solid piece.

3. REFINE & COMPLETE: Using the information gained from the critique you will have two more days to finish your poster and submit it to me as a PDF. I will show all of the posters to the class upon completion and we will vote for our favorites.... poster group and an overall favorite.

Remember to keep it simple but BOLD.

things for points: Page of notes (100pts) 4 poster sketches (200 pts.), Poster in for critique (200 pts) Final poster (800 pts.)

Modernist Poster Swipe

Essential Question: Using my knowledge of PS and AI can I recreate a modernist poster in style and appearance?

There are a few things you are going to have to accomplish in this class period. First CLICK HERE to search a wide variety of Modernist posters and their designers. Once you find one that you like the most, you are going to open it in photoshop or illustrator and re-create it with the information provided in this poster example below (Glencoe Crimson Tide, the address and phone #).
*BE CAREFUL: Make sure you choose a modernist poster. Some of them may be confusing and there are a few Post-Modernist in there.

AGAIN- Copy the poster in shape, layout, type family and design but make all of the information "Glencoe"

When you are done, you need to turn in a file named lastnameSwipe.(AI or PSD) to the the Modernist Swipe folder on the server.

You will be graded on HOW WELL YOU replicate the style of the poster you choose.

Have fun and good luck.

Type

We are starting to get into the world of modernism and to be successful in this era you need to have a solid grasp on the categories of type. The image below shows an example of the four categories with a little info on each of them.
You will need to turn in a .jpg to the server folder titled LastNameType.
• Create a new file (Make sure the units are set to inches and make it 10x10)
• You will type each category name TWICE, in the same category style. Type the name first and then change it to the font that you feel represents it by going to TYPE>FONT and then clicking on your choice (ex. Type the word Sans-Serif, twice, in a Sans-Serif font).
• You will also have to write the description that goes with each type family (Only need to write this once for each category)
*You are completing this assignment to show me that you understand what the differences between the categories are.
**Create this in Illustrator (**You can not SAVE as a .jpg.... you must FILE>EXPORT>EXPORT AS and then select .jpg)

Happy typing.
